Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions about Artistry Of Blessed Hands Last-Chance Housing? Find answers below. For immediate assistance, call (412) 479-4611.

SECTION 1: WHO WE SERVE

Q: Who can live at Artistry Of Blessed Hands?

A: We provide housing for homeless individuals who have steady monthly income (SSI, SSDI, or VA benefits) but face barriers that prevent them from securing traditional housing. We accept people with criminal records, eviction histories, mental health challenges, substance abuse backgrounds, bad credit, and no rental history.

Q: Do you really accept people with criminal records?

A: Yes. We review each situation individually and accept most criminal backgrounds. We focus on your current situation and commitment to following house rules, not your past. The only exceptions are recent violent offenses (within 6 months), active warrants, arson, or manufacturing methamphetamine.

Q: What if I've been evicted before?

A: We understand that evictions happen, often during difficult times like mental health crises or financial hardship. Past evictions do not automatically disqualify you. We care about where you are now and your commitment to stability.

Q: Do you accept people with mental health issues?

A: Yes. Many of our residents have mental health diagnoses including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, PTSD, depression, and anxiety. We ask that you take prescribed medications (or have a plan to start) and work with a case manager or support person. We're experienced and comfortable with mental health challenges.

Q: What about substance abuse history?

A: We accept people with substance abuse histories who are in recovery or willing to enter treatment. We have a zero-tolerance policy for drug use on the property, but we don't discriminate against people with past addiction issues. Recovery is a journey, and we support your sobriety.

SECTION 2: COST & AFFORDABILITY

Q: How much is rent?

A: Rent is $555 per month, all-inclusive. This includes:

  • Heat

  • Electricity

  • Water and sewer

  • WiFi internet

  • Laundry access

  • Trash removal

One flat rate. No hidden fees. No surprises.

Q: I only get $943/month from SSI. Can I afford this?

A: We work with many SSI recipients successfully. Options include:

  • Rapid rehousing subsidies: Many agencies can subsidize $200-300 of your rent, bringing your portion down to $255-355/month

  • Representative payees: If you have a rep payee, they can ensure rent is paid first

  • Flexible payment plans: We can work with you on timing

Additionally, $555 all-inclusive actually saves money compared to cheaper rent plus separate utility bills ($150-200/month).

Q: Do you accept Section 8 vouchers?

A: Not currently, but we're working toward it. We do accept rapid rehousing subsidies and work with rent assistance programs. Contact us to discuss your specific situation.

Q: What's the security deposit?

A: Security deposit is typically one month's rent ($555), but we offer:

  • Payment plans (pay over 2-3 months)

  • Reduced deposits for urgent placements

  • Waived deposits in some emergency situations

  • Agency-funded deposits through partnerships

We're flexible because we understand starting over is hard.

Q: Are utilities really included?

A: Yes! All utilities are included in your $555/month rent:

  • Heat (even in Rochester winters!)

  • Electricity

  • Water and sewer

  • WiFi internet

  • Laundry access

You'll never get a surprise utility bill. Budget with confidence.

Q: How do I apply?

A: Three easy ways:

  1. Online: Fill out our application at aobhlastchancehousing.org/apply

  2. Phone: Call (412) 479-4611 and we'll take your application over the phone

  3. In person: By appointment only

Q: How long does the application process take?

  • Day 1-2: Schedule showing

  • Day 2-3: Move in

Total time from application to move-in: 24-48 hours.

Q: Do you do background checks?

A: Yes, we run background checks, but not to automatically disqualify people. We use them to:

  • Verify identity

  • Assess current safety (not judge past mistakes)

  • Understand what support you might need

  • Ensure compatibility with other residents

We accept most backgrounds. The check helps us help you.

Q: What do I need to move in?

A: You need:

  • Valid photo ID (state ID, driver's license, or other government ID)

  • Proof of income (award letter, benefit statement, or pay stub)

  • First month's rent ($555)

  • Security deposit (or payment plan agreement)

That's it! you may have to obtain assistance for a bed!

Q: Can I move in immediately?

A: In most cases, yes! If you have verifiable income and can follow house rules, we can place you within 24-48 hours. For emergency situations (hospital discharge, shelter exit deadline, jail release), we prioritize same-day or next-day placement.

Q: I don't have an ID. Can I still apply?

A: Contact us. We can work with you to obtain ID through partner agencies. This may delay move-in slightly, but we can help navigate the process.

A: 30 days written notice. You're responsible for rent until the end of your notice period.
